I Love to Read month is an opportunity in our school to reinforce the importance of, and the inherent joy that comes with reading. Being able to “read to learn” is the ultimate goal of early-years education. As a school we used this month to involve our students in fun and engaging activities that promoted literacy.

Theme: Olympics

Slogan: Read for Gold

Here is a summary of the events our students took part in over the past month:

Book Bracket Challenge-throughout the month we had assemblies and at each assembly we read 2 picture books. Students voted on their favourite book after each assembly. The winning book moved on to ‘face’ another book. The grand champion was “Mother Bruce” by Ryan T. Higgins.

Bookmark Challenge-most students design an Olympic/Reading themed bookmark. We selected a winner for Gold, Silver and Bronze and prizes will be awarded.

Classroom Bingo-these were held every day during morning announcements. Classrooms tried to get various patterns on their bingo sheet.

School Goal-we had an Olympic torch that moved from the early years end to the middle years end based on how many books we read as a school.

Classroom Challenge-the top 3 classrooms that have read the most books or chapters in February will receive a prize.

Drop.Everything.And.Read-happened during teachers own schedules.

Flashlight Fridays every Friday, students brought in flashlights to read in the dark!

Teacher Swap Read Aloud-teachers swapped classrooms on  2 different days to read to different classes.

Special “Thank you” goes out to Ms.Hoas, Ms.Marttila, and Ms.Williams for organizing and leading such an amazing variety of activities for this important event.
